Patriots open with win over Gators

spchs bpsports niagara 092323Michael Schram lives and breathes Saint Paul Patriots football.

The 17-year-old, Grade 12B student loves suiting up for the blue and white so much he’s returned to school for victory lap of sorts in order to be able to play one last season.

“This is the best place to play football, I wouldn’t want to play anywhere else,” Schram said after scoring a pair of touchdowns as the Patriots defeated the Lakeshore Catholic Gators 35-14 in a Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior boys football game Friday afternoon at Saint Paul. “I loved football growing up all my life. I’ve been playing since Grade 11 and just love this school for football. We had a lot of guys come out during the off-season and just got better and better as a team.

Vernon earns MVP honours (2)

Isiah Vernon was in it to win it.

The 18-year-old, Grade 12B student at Greater Fort Erie Secondary School enjoyed playing with some of his contemporaries at the 2023 Niagara All-Star Showcase, but when push came to shove, he wanted to emerge with a victory.

Vernon did his part, pouring in 13 points and being named the game’s Most Valuable Player to lead Team Black to a 83-80 victory over Team White in the Next 10 Game held at Saint Paul High School Tuesday.

Heyes goes out with a bang

Saint Francis’ Anthony Heyes completed his high school basketball career Tuesday night at Saint Paul with an MVP performance in the Top 10 game of the 2023 Niagara All-Star Showcase.

Heyes poured in 21 points to power Team Black to a 117-106 victory over Team White.

The game was bittersweet.

“It is upsetting but it is also was a good four years. I am happy with it.”
